CSS grid, and the lack of Exclusions.

Or, I must be insane, this should work, right?

As I'm digging more and more into css-grid, and falling more and more in love with it(yes still!), I ran into a snag. let me show you where it started, right at the MDN documentation. there is this example, that runs in a code-pen:

Ok, while that was a good starting point, things are better while testing it with some actual content. Pouring in some lipsum, never hurts. so here we go:
 

Ahum. right. Well, while still learning, I decided to ask, time for some TDL. (you know, right? Twitter Driven Learning)

 What a relief.. not hit with sudden insanity. Uh, wait. This seems like a pretty standard thing to do, especially now grids are available in all mainstream browsers. And the only workable solution is in IE only?  That's different for a change!

So, please dear standard bodies and browser builders. Create a better solution for this. we can program our way out, but really, that shoudn't be needed, right?
